The Poker Face Playbook: 84 Creator Ads, One Mobile Install Machine

Poker Face is one of the biggest social poker apps in the world. When Comunix — the studio behind it — wanted fresh install creative, they didn't hire a production house. They opened an $6,000 creator challenge on AdArena, and 84 creator-made ads landed in three weeks. 30 got paid. Selected winners are already in Comunix's paid ad accounts, running against real install spend.
This is what a UGC-first mobile install pipeline looks like in 2026.
"AdArena helped us generate 84 creator-made ads for PokerFace, giving us a strong pool of creative assets to test. We're already running selected videos in paid campaigns for app installs, which made the process feel practical and much faster than sourcing creators one by one." — Idan S., CEO, Comunix
The brief in one line
Comunix asked creators for one thing: make me want to sit down at the table with my friends. The prize pool was $6,000, first place $1,500, deadline 20 days. Every submission had to be short-form vertical video — the format that owns install feeds on TikTok and Reels.
Everything else — script, cast, setting, hook, CTA — was left to the creator. That's the discipline. A brand that dictates the hook is a brand that gets 84 versions of the same ad. Comunix wanted 84 different attempts.
By the numbers
- Prize pool: $6,000
- First prize: $1,500
- Days active: 20
- Submissions: 84
- Winners paid: 30
- End use: Paid app-install campaigns

What won
Three patterns showed up in the winning 30, and they now form Comunix's internal template for briefing external creators.
Card-flip hooks in the first 2 seconds
The highest watch-through belonged to ads that opened on a hand action — a card flip, a chip stack landing, a raise gesture — inside the first two seconds. Product logos in the first frame killed watch-through. The action came first, the brand came at second three, the CTA at second seven.
This mirrors what we see across mobile gaming on the AdArena leaderboard and in the AI Video Ads knowledge hub: the first two seconds are the entire ad.
Real friend-group footage beat polished influencer reads
Comunix went in assuming polished creator-read ads would carry. The leaderboard disagreed. Real-friend footage — three people at a real table, real reactions to a real hand — out-performed influencer scripts. The theory is simple: install ads work when they show the future you're being sold. Poker Face's future is "playing with your friends." Real friends selling that future beat a paid influencer every time.
Single-verb CTAs won
"Play now." "Deal me in." Two words. That was it. Long CTAs — "Download Poker Face today for a chance to win real cash prizes" — killed conversion. Mobile install ads live and die on the first two seconds and the last two seconds. Single verbs owned the last two.
The playbook
Copy this for any mobile gaming install campaign:
- Open on the action, not the logo. First frame = gameplay moment.
- Real people over paid faces. Casting influencers is a lag indicator; casting friend groups is a lead indicator.
- Single-verb CTA. "Play now." Anything longer is friction.
- Prize pool = signal. $6,000 tells serious creators you're a serious buyer. $600 doesn't.
- Pay 25–30 winners. You need a library to plug into your ad account, not one hero.
- Ship winners into paid inside 7 days. The ads are freshest the week they're published.
- License is included. AdArena winners come with usage rights — no separate contract.
Why AdArena
Sourcing mobile install creators one at a time is a full-time job. Running one AdArena challenge gets you a pipeline. Frequently asked questions
Why 20 days? Long enough for creators to shoot with a real cast, short enough to keep momentum. Under 14 days rushes production; over 30 kills urgency.
Can I direct the creators mid-challenge? You can leave a comment on any submission and update the brief in real time. Most brands leave the format alone and just clarify the product.
How do rights work? Winner payouts include a usage license for the brand. You can run winners in paid campaigns immediately.
Is UGC really cheaper than a production shoot? For install creative, yes — dramatically. Comunix got 84 ads for the price of two production days.
Can I re-run the same brief for a second round? Yes, and many brands do. Round two typically pulls a different creator cohort, so you get fresh angles.
