We Analyzed All 694 Submissions to Our AI Ad Competitions. Here's What Actually Predicts Winning.

AdArena has now completed 8 brand competitions: 694 video submissions, 217 of which won prize money, all judged by the brands that paid for the briefs. That''s a dataset nobody else in AI advertising publishes. We pulled it apart looking for what predicts winning.
1. Fully-AI beats hybrid, and it''s not close
Submissions that were 100% AI-generated won 33% of the time. Videos mixing real footage with AI won 14%. Pure animation entries landed at 32%.
We expected the opposite — that grounding AI content with real shots would read as more premium. Our working theory: hybrid videos invite comparison to real production and lose that comparison, while fully-AI videos get judged on their own terms.

2. Procrastination doesn''t hurt
77% of all submissions arrive in the final third of the competition window. Win rates by submission timing: first third 36%, middle third 33%, final third 31%. Essentially flat. Submit when ready.
3. Volume beats perfectionism, mildly
Creators entering 2+ videos in one competition: 40% won. One-and-done creators: 36%. Not a huge edge — but it''s free.
4. Winning is learnable
48 of 107 winners have won more than one competition. 21 have won three or more. One creator has eight winning videos. A lottery doesn''t produce compounding names; a skill does.
5. The bar is lower than people think
31% of all submissions won money. Per-competition range: 12% to 47% (excluding our launch competition''s outlier 85%). People imagine thousands of entries fighting for one prize. Brand-brief competitions actually run 50–170 videos against 10–50 prize slots.
Caveats
Single platform. Ad-format videos (30–60s vertical). Brand judges, not public vote. n=694. Directional, not gospel. The next analysis layer — hooks, faces, pacing — requires hand-tagging every video, and it''s coming.
FAQ
Should I mix real footage into an AI ad? The data says no: hybrid entries won at less than half the rate of fully-AI entries across 8 competitions.
Does submitting early improve odds? No measurable effect. Quality of the entry is what moves the needle.
