How can I test 100 ad concepts without paying for 100 productions?
You change what you are buying. Instead of paying per production, you pay one prize pool and let creators compete for it — only winners are paid. On AdArena a single brief has returned as many as 169 original ads, so one budget buys a wide concept search rather than a handful of commissioned videos.
In one paragraph
The economics that make it possible
Commissioned production is priced per output: 100 videos means 100 fees. A competition is priced per outcome: you fund a prize pool, publish a brief, and creators decide whether to enter. Everyone who enters produces a finished ad; only the winners you choose get paid.
That is why volume stops scaling with cost. Doubling submissions does not double the invoice — it deepens the pool the prize is competing for.
What the numbers actually look like
Across AdArena competitions run so far, briefs have averaged around 81 submitted ads, with a top single competition of 169 and 650 ads submitted in total. Prize pools have ranged from $2,500 to $50,000, with $5,000–$10,000 the common band. At those ratios the cost per submitted ad concept lands well under $100.
Volume only helps if the concepts differ
100 near-identical renders is not a test — it is one hypothesis rendered 100 times. The value of competition is that each creator arrives with their own reference set, humour, pacing and worldview, so the spread of ideas is real.
- Write the brief around the problem, not the storyboard, or you will get your own idea back 80 times.
- Ask explicitly for distinct hooks and angles in the submission guidelines.
- Shortlist across angles first, then judge craft within each angle.
What you keep
Brands own full commercial IP on the winning ads they select, and non-winning submissions can be bought out separately if a concept is worth having. The practical result is a library you own outright, not a rental.
